New York style and fashion is reflected in every aspect of life. Everyone from seniors to infants have a cool look that adds to the visual energy of the city. Most New Yorkers create an image that is sophisticated and different from the rest of the country and we take a sense of pride that our hair styles and clothes fashion stand out from the rest of the pack.

We have heard a great deal about the family in the media in the last few decades.

Some people seem to think that the family is under attack. There are some who have a set belief in “ family values “ and feel the need to impose their views on everyone who has developed their own ideas about family life.

New York City is the most diverse city in the world. This diversity creates a unique environment for people to develop and define their own relationships. Now, unique relationships exist throughout the country, but in New York, people can generally live at ease and feel confident that they won't be judged because of their unique “ family structure.”

When you consider that many young people move to the city after college to begin their careers.

A good number from other states and countries, they are far removed from the family they grew up with and develop a new “ family” with their roommates, coworkers and new friends. Most people find emotional support and comfort through these new relationships.

The city is big enough to allow same sex couples to live a normal existence and, while the outer boroughs have always been a natural fit for families with children, since the 1990's Manhattan has seen an increase in couples choosing to raise their children in the center of New York . There are many families who are leaving the suburbs and moving to New York because of the cultural advantages the city has to offer.

You constantly read in the newspapers about the traffic of baby carriages going up and down the avenues. It gives testament to how attractive New York has become for families raising children.

The advantages of living in this city and the general comfort with which people can fit in make New York so special.

I personally experienced that creation of a family circle when I was a single man in Manhattan. I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens and when I moved to “ The City,” my family had moved out to different parts of Long Island and Florida. I built relationships with acquaintances and people I worked with and many of those friendships are as close today as they were then. I think of them as family.
I have lived here all my life and my wife and I could not think of a better place to raise our daughter.

When Sofia was born, it was apparent that we were in new territory. Our friends here in the city were either married with grown children, no children or single. By the time Sofia was a toddler we discovered an amazing amount of activities for children. Through this we made friends with other parents and created a new “ family “ network. Sofia is almost a “ tween “ now ( heaven help us ! ), and travels independently to her middle school on the city bus.

Growing up here has been a great advantage because of her exposure to the diversity of the city. She has a level of sophistication and “ street smarts” that help her make smart decisions. The public schools are very good and she is receiving a quality education.

I have been a hairdresser and colorist in Manhattan, both as a former salon owner and a hair designer for Dramatics for a long time. When I was young and single, I would share with my clients about the hottest clubs and find out from them what were the coolest happenings going on around town. Today, along with sharing ideas of new trends in hair, I get great information from my clients and share tips concerning children in the city. I love this town and I am so glad to be in this profession.
